Skiing in Niseko: The Complete Guide to Annupuri, Lift Passes and Ski Rental
Niseko has earned a reputation as one of the world's premier ski destinations, attracting visitors from across the globe in search of legendary powder snow, breathtaking scenery and authentic Japanese hospitality.
While many first-time visitors focus on Hirafu, experienced skiers often discover that Annupuri offers one of the most enjoyable and relaxed skiing experiences on the mountain. With shorter lift queues, family-friendly terrain, excellent powder access and a quieter atmosphere, Annupuri is one of our favourite areas in Niseko and the home of Cove Niseko.
Whether you are planning your first ski holiday in Japan or returning for another powder-filled adventure, this guide covers everything you need to know before hitting the slopes.
Why Ski in Annupuri?
Niseko United consists of four interconnected ski areas:
Annupuri
Niseko Village
Grand Hirafu
Hanazono
Together they form one of the largest and most famous ski destinations in Japan. A single pass can provide access across all four resorts, allowing visitors to explore the entire mountain.
Annupuri offers a different experience from the busier Hirafu area. Guests staying in Annupuri enjoy:
Shorter lift queues
Wide, uncrowded slopes
Excellent beginner and intermediate terrain
Easy access to powder skiing
A quieter, more authentic atmosphere
Convenient access to nearby onsens
For families and luxury travellers, Annupuri strikes the perfect balance between world-class skiing and mountain tranquillity.

Niseko's Legendary Powder Snow
Niseko is famous for its exceptionally light and dry powder snow, often referred to as "Japow" by skiers and snowboarders. Consistent storms rolling in from Siberia create some of the most reliable powder conditions anywhere in the world. Niseko regularly ranks among the world's premier powder destinations.
Whether you are a beginner enjoying groomed runs or an advanced skier exploring powder stashes, snow quality is one of the biggest reasons visitors return year after year.
Which Lift Pass Should You Buy?
Choosing the right lift pass depends on how much of Niseko you want to explore.
Annupuri Lift Pass
Ideal for:
Families
Beginners
Guests planning to ski primarily in Annupuri
Annupuri offers 5-hour, 1-day and multi-day passes, making it a cost-effective option for those staying nearby. Online purchase can help avoid queues at the ticket office.
Annupuri and Niseko Village Pass
Ideal for:
Intermediate skiers
Families wanting additional terrain
This combined pass gives access to both Annupuri and Niseko Village while remaining more affordable than a full mountain pass.
Niseko United All Mountain Pass
Ideal for:
First-time visitors
Intermediate and advanced skiers
Guests staying for several days
The All Mountain Pass provides access to Annupuri, Niseko Village, Hirafu and Hanazono, allowing skiers to explore the entire Niseko United network. It also includes access to resort shuttle services between the different villages.
Our recommendation for most guests staying more than three days is the All Mountain Pass, as it offers the greatest flexibility and allows you to experience every part of the mountain.
Can You Ski Between the Resorts?
Yes.
One of Niseko's biggest advantages is that the four ski areas are interconnected. Skiers can move between Annupuri, Niseko Village, Hirafu and Hanazono during the day without needing to remove their skis, provided lifts and weather conditions allow. Many experienced visitors recommend exploring the entire mountain rather than remaining in a single resort area.
Ski Rental in Niseko
For most international visitors, renting equipment in Niseko is the easiest option.
Rental shops offer:
Performance skis
Powder skis
Snowboards
Helmets
Boots
Jackets and pants
Children's equipment
If travelling during peak holiday periods, reserving equipment in advance is recommended, particularly if you have specific requirements or are looking for premium powder skis. Outside peak weeks, rental availability is generally excellent.
Skiing for Beginners
Annupuri is one of the best places in Niseko for beginner skiers.
Wide open slopes, gentle terrain and a relaxed atmosphere make learning enjoyable and less intimidating than busier areas. Families with children particularly appreciate the space and ease of navigation.
Professional ski schools and private instructors are also available throughout the resort.
Skiing for Advanced Skiers
Advanced skiers will find plenty to enjoy beyond the groomed runs.
Highlights include:
Powder skiing
Tree runs
Gate-access terrain
Backcountry opportunities
Long top-to-bottom runs
Many experienced riders consider the Annupuri side of the mountain one of Niseko's hidden gems for powder skiing and fewer crowds.
Night Skiing in Niseko
Niseko is home to one of Asia's largest night-skiing operations.
Skiing under floodlit slopes while fresh snow continues to fall is a uniquely magical experience and something every visitor should try at least once. Night operations typically run throughout the core winter season. The view from Cove Niseko of the ski slopes at walking distance is mesmerising . I would go home after a day of skiing, have a rest , grab some food and then walk back to the slopes to ski down the slope seeing the sunset and wait for the lights to come on. An experience only in Japan. In Euope, I would have stopped skiing by late afternoon. Here , I could go on till 8 pm.
