Best Mountain Restaurants on the Slopes & Trails

All open mountain restaurants remain accessible on foot throughout the winter, thanks to well-marked trails. While some paths can be quite steep and may not suit the elderly or those recovering from injury, sturdy footwear and walking spikes are highly recommended.

With the right gear, you’ll find winter walks to these restaurants both manageable and enjoyable.

Tips to Maximise Your Zermatt Dining Experience

Book ahead – Popular restaurants, especially Michelin-starred or mountain huts in peak season, fill up quickly. Make reservations well in advance.

Try a mountain hut lunch – Some of the best meals are found mid-slope. Pair a rösti or fondue with panoramic Matterhorn views for the full alpine experience.

Go local with Valais wines – Zermatt sits in the heart of wine country. Ask for regional wines like Petite Arvine, Cornalin, or Heida to elevate your meal.

Mix casual with gourmet – Balance fine dining with cosy chalets, bakeries, and pizzerias. Zermatt is as much about rustic charm as Michelin stars.

Don’t skip the specialities – Raclette, fondue, rösti, and game meats are classics here. Many restaurants add their own twist worth trying.

Time your meals – Lunchtime on the slopes is busiest between 12–2 pm. Go early or later to beat the rush and snag the best terrace tables.

Leave room for dessert – From elegant patisserie cakes to double-helping gourmet creations, Zermatt is serious about its sweets.

Check seasonal openings – Some mountain huts and terraces are summer-only. Always confirm before heading out.

I even have a photo of my mum with Mark when he was six months old and Mark at the same spot 8 years later. That started a dream for me to have a home in Zermatt. My happy place.
